On Saturday, President’s Office Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) announced that 205 political employees have been dismissed from government positions as part of continuous efforts to cut state spending.

In an interview with state media PSM News, Mundhu stated that four political staff were let go on Saturday as part of the government’s spending-reduction policy. So far, the employees that have been removed consist of state ministers, deputy ministers, senior political directors, and political directors, he stated.

Mundhu remarked that the ongoing attempts to lower the count of political appointees are still in progress, and additional dismissals may be anticipated.

“To date, 205 workers have been dismissed, among them state ministers, deputy ministers, senior political directors, and political directors.” It remains an incomplete task. "Therefore, this figure could fluctuate moving forward," he stated.

The government has yet to reveal the complete count of political positions presently occupied, leaving it ambiguous how proportional the cut is in relation to the total staffing. The opposition claims that the count of political staff is nearly 2,000.

In his 2023 presidential campaign and transition phase, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu committed to capping political staff in his administration at a maximum of 700. The President has mandated cuts in political roles and personnel in state-owned enterprises to enhance the state's financial condition.
