The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has advised the public to adopt safety measures as the impacts of El Niño are expected to reach their peak in the Maldives this upcoming November.

Toward the end of last month, the Met Office announced that the El Niño event was gaining strength and indicated that the circumstances were under close observation.

El Niño is a worldwide climate event linked to substantial alterations in weather patterns due to the increase in ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.

Even though it doesn't happen at consistent intervals, the occurrence typically unfolds every two to seven years. Its effects generally persist for nine to twelve months, though they may sometimes last for a few years.

In a later interview with state media, the Met Office indicated that the Maldives is anticipated to feel the greatest impacts of El Niño in November.

PSM reports, referencing the Met Office, that conditions are anticipated to persist until February next year, with the Maldives expected to see decreased rainfall throughout this time.

The Met Office additionally cautioned that increasing ocean surface temperatures might present difficulties for the fishing sector, while temperatures throughout the Maldives are predicted to stay above normal during this time.

In reaction, officials have encouraged industries such as tourism, agriculture, and fisheries to implement proactive safety and risk reduction strategies.
