President Dr. Muizzu has announced the decision to put an income cap for full coverage of the public health insurance scheme, Aasandha, for individuals who earn 60K or higher in income. 

At a press briefing held on 7th of September, President Muizzu stated the current state of the Aasandha scheme has not been the best, as believed by experts both local and international.

He further clarified that individuals with an income of 60,000 or higher will not get full coverage on Aasandha, and must opt for having to pre-pay or co-pay, alongside having to pay an annual fee to the government.

He stated that his administration has been working on this change to begin from the start of October, where they amend the policy on provision of Aasandha for wealthy people, as well as people eligible to pay income tax.

Moreover, President Muizzu said that wealthy people should not enjoy free services, the same as average income or low income citizens, highlighting this significant change will save MVR 287 Million in annual budget expenses.

He further emphasized that following this decision, the amount saved will be utilized in order to meet more pressing needs of the public, whilst next year it is assumed to save MVR 280 Million.
