Transport Minister Mohamed Saeed announced on Wednesday that, according to the recently passed Land Transport Act, the state will obtain vehicles older than 20 years only after offering their owners appropriate compensation.

The Land Transport Act, signed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on August 31st, bans the use of land vehicles that are over 20 years old from their manufacturing date, except for certain categories that will be specified in future regulations.

During a press conference convened to detail the features of the new law, Minister Saeed stated that the President’s vision aims to improve national security while reducing the financial and personal strain on citizens. He mentioned that a balanced strategy would be implemented to tackle the decommissioning of older vehicles.

"The Minister explained that we will engage with the public to find a compromise that guarantees citizens do not encounter excessive hardship or financial pressure during this change."

He also mentioned that the law includes a three-year grace period prior to the implementation of rules banning the use of older vehicles. He stated that following the end of the grace period, specific measures will be implemented for those who must stop using vehicles older than 20 years.

"The government, or a body appointed by the government, will obtain these vehicles upon remitting a specified amount," he stated.

According to the new law, a vehicle's registration will be canceled after it turns 20 years old since its production. The law additionally empowers the Ministry to establish a program to buy such vehicles from their owners following procedures that will be created via regulations.
