The symbol for the Maldivian Rufiyaa has been officially incorporated into Unicode 18.0, the latest version of the Unicode Standard launched on Wednesday by the Unicode Consortium.

The official Rufiyaa symbol is derived from the Thaana letter 'Raa', incorporating an extra horizontal line through its center.

According to Unicode Standard Version 18.0, the code point U+20C2 has been designated for the Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol.

The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) announced that incorporating the Rufiyaa symbol, initially introduced by the authority in 2022, into the Unicode Standard will enable its consistent use on websites, mobile apps, and various digital platforms.

The MMA regarded the advancement as an important milestone for facilitating the smooth incorporation of the national currency symbol into digital communications. The authority also conveyed its gratitude to everyone engaged in the efforts to ensure the symbol's addition to the Unicode Standard.

The Unicode Consortium is the global body that oversees standards to guarantee that currency symbols and characters from various nations are uniformly represented on digital platforms.

Nevertheless, the creation and design of a national currency symbol continue to be the exclusive responsibility of the official authorities of the country in question.
