Mayor Adam Azim stated on Saturday that the Male' City Council could conserve MVR 40 million each year if citizens were more diligent in minimizing the waste generated in the capital.

The Male' City Council, teaming up with the Scout Association, the National University Students Union, Clean Maldives, and the Maldives Ocean Plastics Alliance (MOPA), organized a cleanup event at the Artificial Beach on Saturday.

Before the event, Azim stated that WAMCO gathers approximately 800 tonnes of waste each day, whereas the council collects 25 tonnes. He stated that the council allocates between MVR 3 million and MVR 5 million each month for waste disposal services.

"The trash gathered from the city isn’t genuine waste; it’s refuse." "This is about waste that individuals ought not to dispose of in this manner," Azim stated.

He encouraged the community to take greater responsibility in waste disposal and to refrain from generating superfluous food.

Azim stated that WAMCO imposes an extra 10 percent for the waste disposed of by the council. WAMCO imposes a fee of MVR 1,000 for public waste disposal, while the council faces a charge of MVR 10,000, he stated.

He mentioned that cutting down on littering could lead to considerable financial savings.

"Residents and foreigners alike generate waste." If everyone begins focusing on this, we can definitely save MVR 3.4 million each month in Male'. “We can reduce costs by MVR 40 million annually,” he stated.

Azim urged garbage collectors to ensure effective collection and pointed out persistent problems like waste being discarded on electricity boxes and being left atop dustbins instead of inside them.
