Maldivian marksman Ahmed Maidh Mohamed established a new national record on Monday at the ongoing Asian Games 2026 in Japan.

Maidh and Umar Mohamed Nasheed both set a national record for 2025 during the men’s 10-meter air rifle competition at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery.

Nasheed set the record initially by achieving 610.2 points. However, Maidh surpassed the record shortly afterward, achieving 614.5 points during the event.

The previous record was set by Ibrahim Shifan, who achieved 605.5 points at the Asian Rifle/Pistol Cup 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand. Shifan, who participated in the event on Monday as well, ended up with 597.3 points, ranking lower than both Maidh and Umar.

Forty-seven shooters from around the globe participated in the men’s 10m air rifle competition, with China’s Sheng Lihao, regarded as one of the greatest sports shooters in history, winning the gold with 635.4 points.

The Maldives shooting squad will next compete on Tuesday in the mixed team event for the 10m air rifle.
