On Tuesday, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) criticized the government's choice to permit the import of plastic straws again, calling the action an environmental regression and a slight to the Maldives' global standing in environmental discussions.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has recently re-permitted the import of plastic straws and has prolonged the deadline for prohibiting plastic bottles ranging from 0.5 liters to 1 liter. The adjustments were approved via a presidential decree on Saturday.

In its release, MDP mentioned that its government implemented the single-use plastic phase-out policy in 2020 and prohibited the import of various disposable plastic products, including plastic straws, in June 2021. The group highlighted that the restriction had been enforced for over a year and had already lessened plastic litter on coastal areas and in communal places.

MDP characterized the government's decision as undoing an important environmental policy that the public and businesses had adjusted to over time. The party expressed that altering these policies without sufficient reasoning diminishes trust in environmental regulations.

The party pointed out that the government has not given any rationale for prolonging the deadline for importing plastic straws and bottles, nor has it offered any proof or research to support the weakening of the ban.

MDP cautioned that ongoing postponements in environmental obligations would deter companies from investing in sustainable options and adhering to upcoming regulations. The party stated that the choice undermines Maldives’ reputation as a leading nation in worldwide initiatives to lessen single-use plastics.

MDP stated that the Maldives ought to regain its leadership in environmental conservation and reinforce its pledge to eliminate single-use plastics. The party promised that a government led by the MDP would enhance the policy aimed at reducing single-use plastics and urged the current administration to completely enforce the existing phase-out strategy.
