Opposition MDP member Mohamed Shamin, detained due to last month’s demonstration, was freed on Tuesday.

Shamin was detained on September 8 for allegedly hindering police officers and breaching barriers set up to block the road during the MDP rally on August 28. The Criminal Court first detained him for 10 days, then prolonged the detention by an extra three days once it ended on Friday.

After his release, Shamin stated that the right to assemble is a constitutional right and that he rejects what he termed as injustice from the current administration towards citizens exercising that right. He stated that the MDP will persist in its efforts.

MDP Legal Director and party attorney Ahmed Mauroof informed Sun that the Criminal Court ordered Shamin's release at 11:30 pm on Tuesday; however, the police did not set him free until 5 pm the next day. He stated that the party views this as illegal detention, and that Shamin ought to have been released right away after the court chose not to prolong his remand. Mauroof stated he plans to initiate a separate case in the Civil Court requesting a declaration that the detention was illegal.

Shamin had been arrested in December 2024 during a protest by taxi drivers and was subsequently released under certain conditions.

Authorities also detained MDP supporter Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed regarding the protest that occurred last month. He was freed after finishing his five-day detention.
