The third phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project has commenced, concentrating on widening and improving the section of road near West Park leading to Malé Commercial Harbour.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), responsible for the project, announced that construction has begun on stormwater drainage wells in the West Park region. The drainage system will be integrated into a new subterranean network that is being created prior to the road's reconstruction and asphalt paving.

This region is one of the parts of Malé most susceptible to flooding during heavy rainfall, often creating challenges for drivers, walkers, and individuals moving across the western part of the city.

After the underground projects are finalized, the roadway will be expanded and upgraded to contemporary norms as part of the government’s broader initiative to enhance Boduthakurufaanu Magu.

MTCC stated that the redevelopment aims to enhance travel convenience and strengthen connections across various areas of Malé. The business anticipates that the enhanced road system will alleviate traffic and improve transportation connections throughout the city.

A lane in the West Park region has been temporarily shut down as work begins. The second lane stays accessible for public vehicles.

The recent project comes after the finishing of the initial two phases of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment, both of which are now accessible to the public.

The initial phase included the area extending from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) to Malé North Harbour. The project included reclaiming a portion of the lagoon to expand the road prior to paving the new section with asphalt.

The second phase focused on the eastern side of the capital, extending from the Nasandhura area in Henveiru to Izzudheen Jetty. Part of the lagoon was similarly reclaimed to create additional space before the road was modernised.

With those sections completed, work is now moving towards the western end of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, including the area surrounding Malé Commercial Harbour.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu recently said on the President’s Office podcast The Pulse that work on the section near Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) would begin before the end of this month.

That stretch is among the most severely deteriorated sections of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, with paving blocks damaged and crumbling in several areas. Its redevelopment is expected to form an important part of the ongoing third phase.
