Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan warned that reckless driving is claiming lives, noting an unusually high number of motorists operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol. 

Addressing the Ahaa Forum, Ihusaan noted that recent tragic road crashes have claimed irreplaceable lives. He added that law enforcement officers find it deeply troubling to see citizens sustain grave injuries while police are out actively trying to keep the roads safe. 

While speaking at the Ahaa Forum, Ihusaan emphasized that dangerous traffic accidents have recently cost valuable lives. He expressed how painful it is for police officers, who are actively enforcing traffic laws, to witness fellow Maldivians suffer severe injuries on the road. 

It has been noted by the minister that the issue of speeding has been a major issue in highly populated islands, due to which the government’s top priority is currently establishing competent and dedicated traffic police services, in order to improve road discipline, in both Male’ and other major cities.

Ihusaan has speculated that the reason for so many accidents to occur is correlated with the amount of people who are driving without the proper testing and license required to drive, and as a result a number of these accidents happen due to people being uneducated on the proper road rules.

Moreover, the minister has highlighted on the notice of numerous vehicles being driven under the influence of alcohol, at which the police are closely investigating.

In addition, he spoke on the recent passing of a 26 year old woman after she suffered serious injuries following her accident on Sosun Magu on the 19th of September, amongst many who have lost their lives due to accidents.
