The South Asian Travel Awards (SATA) has recognised Mohamed Solih, Chairman of Damas Company, with the prestigious Face of South Asia accolade, honouring his outstanding contributions to the Maldives’ tourism industry, business development and national economic progress.
The recognition celebrates Solih’s remarkable entrepreneurial journey and his longstanding role in shaping the country’s business landscape. From his early experiences in trade and logistics to his involvement in tourism development and the establishment of successful business ventures, his career reflects resilience, determination and a commitment to creating opportunities for future generations.
A pioneering Maldivian entrepreneur, Solih began his career at a young age in Gan, Addu Atoll, gaining practical experience in store management, logistics, construction and project development. Following the British withdrawal from Gan, he moved to Malé, where he continued building his career. Despite facing significant personal and professional challenges, including surviving a shipwreck while travelling between the atolls, he rebuilt his livelihood and pursued new business opportunities.
His entrepreneurial journey expanded through the co-founding of Altaf Enterprises and his entry into tourism with the development of Lhohifushi Island Resort. He subsequently established and developed several businesses, including DIMMS, Damas and Simdi, contributing to the growth of the Maldives’ commercial and tourism sectors. His involvement in the development of Herathera Resort in Addu further demonstrated his commitment to expanding economic opportunities beyond the capital.
Beyond his business ventures, Solih has played an active role in supporting the country’s wider economic development. As President of the Maldives Chamber of Commerce and twice Vice President of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce, he advocated for entrepreneurship and greater opportunities for Maldivians, particularly young people and women. He also contributed to initiatives supporting women entrepreneurs, including the establishment of the Women’s Entrepreneurial Council.
His contributions extend to national economic policymaking and international engagement. Solih served on the Economic Advisory Board and the board of the Maldives Monetary Authority, was appointed Royal Thai Consul and supported national relief efforts following the 2004 tsunami. His involvement in developing international tourism markets, including helping establish China as an important source market for the Maldives, further highlights his contribution to the country’s tourism growth.
Throughout his career, Solih has emphasised resilience, integrity, long-term relationships and community support as key principles of sustainable business success. His willingness to support aspiring entrepreneurs across the islands, including by providing goods on credit and practical assistance to help local businesses grow, reflects his belief in the importance of shared progress and community development.
The Face of South Asia accolade recognises individuals whose achievements and contributions have helped shape the region’s tourism, hospitality and business landscape. Solih’s recognition celebrates a career that extends beyond commercial success, reflecting his influence on entrepreneurship, tourism development and economic opportunities in the Maldives.
