The Criminal Court has set the sentencing date for former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom in the R. Fuggiri bribery and money laundering case for October 29.

During a hearing on Tuesday, presiding Judge Ali Nadeem declared that all trial stages had concluded after the defense completed its closing arguments. The prosecution presented its final statements during the hearing on Wednesday.

President Yameen is charged with taking a bribe and money laundering related to the lease of Fuggiri via the MMPRC without a public tender. Although the case initially included accusations against six distinct parties, the state has subsequently dropped the charges against the others.

The prosecution claims that the deal—in which Fuggiri was rented to Dubai's Classic City Island Holdings for USD 1.55 million without a bidding competition—was arranged to benefit Yameen financially. The state additionally argues that the agreement was designed to underestimate the true value to the state, guaranteeing that the leftover funds were directed to Yameen and his political party.
