Former President and opposition MDP Chairman Mohamed Nasheed stated on Saturday that this is not the right moment for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to hold power, and it would be a significant setback to retain him in office.
During a press conference in Hulhudhoo, Addu City, Nasheed mentioned that the island has not experienced any significant developments over the last three years since the current administration took office. He pointed out that although state-owned enterprises have generated employment, there have been no initiatives to develop industries or foster lasting wealth for the community.
Nasheed stated that the government's actions are negatively affecting all Maldivians, including the residents of Hulhudhoo. Merchants on the island informed him that the costs of items have increased by 20 to 30 percent. He ascribed the increase in commodity prices to the ongoing dollar shortfall and the absence of development initiatives. Nasheed stated that voting for the ruling PNC is pointless, claiming the government’s policies are directionless.
He stated that the nation’s available reserves are currently inadequate to purchase goods for even two weeks. He also condemned the government's choice to abolish the tax on foreign tour operators, stating it was influenced by pressure from those firms.
“This is not the right moment for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to lead the Maldives.” He must resign. “Our nation is entering extremely delicate and perilous circumstances,” stated Nasheed.
Nasheed then emphasized the President's trip to Pakistan this week. He mentioned that the visit has positioned Maldives at the center of the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan. Nasheed argues that this presents a threat to Maldives’ security, and if India sees its own safety at risk, it might significantly affect the Maldives.
