Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem cautioned that upcoming generations might turn into "second-class citizens in their own country," criticizing what he termed as attempts to place the Maldivian government and political system under a foreign billionaire's influence.
Meekail Ahmed Naseem, Member of Parliament for the Galolhu South constituency from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has cautioned that upcoming generations might end up as “second-class citizens in their own land,” raising concerns about what he labeled as attempts to place the Maldivian state and its political framework under the influence of a foreign billionaire.
In a post on X directed at candidates looking for his vote and backing in the upcoming MDP National Council election, Meekail expressed that the outcome should not hinge on factional allegiances or backing specific presidential primary candidates, but rather on candidates’ readiness to operate independently and prioritize the nation's interest.
"To every candidate contacting me for my vote and backing in the forthcoming MDP National Council election. This election, for me, is not focused on which presidential primary candidate you support or what 'group' you're affiliated with. I will cast my vote for individuals who will support independently and free from excessive pressure, focusing on the nation's interests and the party's future".
Meekail subsequently urged the candidates to elucidate their stances on the Eagle Hills project, presenting the matter as a concern of national significance and external impact.
In this context, the most important question is: what is your position on the current attempts to bring the whole Maldivian government and the political system under the influence of a foreign billionaire?
Cautioning about potential long-lasting effects, Meekail asserted that today's political ties would hold little value if future generations had to confront the repercussions of choices made now.
