The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has called on the public and media to refrain from sharing images or personal details of victims in a reported sexual assault incident involving a woman and two minors on a southern island.

The commission cautioned that disclosing identifying details about the victims might cause them additional harm and damage their dignity.

HRCM similarly urged for a swift inquiry into the matter and for those accountable to face prosecution.

Authorities have sent a specialized unit to the island to examine the claims. Police reported that nine individuals have been detained in relation to the case.

A 22-year-old female was allegedly harmed in the event. The matter includes claims of sexual assault by several people against the woman, in addition to alleged sexual abuse and exploitation of two minors under 18.

Authorities reported that they had recognized multiple claims of sexual abuse and exploitation concerning minors and were considering the situation as serious.
