The Thilamale’ Bridge project officially connected the islands of Vilimale’ and Gulhifalhu on Friday, marking a significant milestone in the undertaking.

In a post on X, Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib shared the news of the successful connection of the last segment between Vilimale’ and Gulhifalhu. He characterized the advancement as an important landmark in the project.

The Minister praised Indian contractor Afcons Infrastructure, consultancy firm Arup, and the project team within the Ministry. He also conveyed gratitude to the Government of India for its ongoing support and thanked everyone who participated in the project.

The Greater Male’ Connectivity Project (GMCP), commonly referred to as the ‘Thilamale’ Bridge Project, represents the most significant infrastructure development initiative in the history of the Maldives.

Funded by a USD 500 million package from India that includes grants and a Line of Credit, the initiative seeks to link Male’, Vilimale’, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi via a 6.74-kilometre system of bridges and causeways.

Superstructure tasks on the Male’-Vilimale’ portion of the project were finalized last August.

After the milestone, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu conveyed optimism that the Thilamale’ Bridge, connecting Male’, Vilimale’, Thilafushi, and Gulhifalhu, would be entirely finished in about one year.
