Heavy rainfall has led to significant flooding in GA. Kolamaafushi, causing considerable harm to residences and community facilities.
In an interview with Sun, Kolamaafushi Council Vice President Shahamath Haneef mentioned that the persistent rain, which started this afternoon, has not diminished. He stated that around 85 percent of residences on the island had experienced flooding, resulting in significant damage to home appliances and electronic devices.
Haneef also mentioned that residents whose houses were rendered uninhabitable by the flooding had been temporarily moved to the homes of relatives.
The island is facing significant flooding. The rain that began this afternoon shows no indication of letting up. "At present, 58 percent of homes have indicated water intrusion, resulting in significant harm to furniture and electrical appliances," Haneef stated.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) announced on Friday evening that, alongside flooding of homes and establishments, the entire island faced a power failure, exacerbating the conditions.
As the island council collaborates with residents to remove the floodwaters, the MNDF Southern Area Command has been activated to offer urgent support.
The NDMA states that a military team is on the way to Kolamaafushi with sandbags and water pumps to stop additional water from entering homes.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has announced that poor weather and rain will persist throughout the nation for the coming five days.
