Former President Nasheed of MDP to form a New Political Party

With huge disputes and disagreements for quite some time which lead to membership dismissal of Nasheed Faction’s Member of Parliament Ali Azim on yesterday by the secretariat of MDP. Has turned things interesting in Maldivian Politics.


Today, 17th May was not only President Nasheed’s 56th B’day , but also announcing the emerge of a new political party with the membership withdrawal of 11 member of parliament who supports the ideology of President Nasheed. They have also expressed their support for the no-confidence motion against several ministers in President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's cabinet.


President Nasheed and his close MP’s move towards the formation of a new party followed his announcement of "Fikuregge Dhirun," a faction within MDP along with the launch of a political campaign.


A significant number of MDP members have joined Fikuregge Dhirun, and active members of the movement claim to have gathered over 50,000 signatures.


The new movement also announced their intention to field a presidential candidate from within the new political party.In the meantime MDP has expressed confidence that they can secure a second presidential term for President Solih, even if Nasheed does not support him.


The show in Maldives has become very interesting and the hype is going high with already announced interests by Jumhooree Party Leader Qasim Ibrahim and Maldives National Party leader Col. rtd Mohamed Nazim and the current President , MDP’s Leader President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih contesting at the Upcoming general election in September.
