Award-winning water-tech company Wayout and global construction company, Hotels & Resort Construction Pvt Ltd have agreed to collaborate to bring Wayout’s eco-friendly technology to the Maldives islands. 

Hotels & Resorts Investment Pvt Ltd has committed to installing and operating 30 Wayout systems in the Maldives, offering clean drinking water to hundreds of thousands of islanders. The luxury resort Waldorf Astoria Maldives will be the first to operate the water system. This instalment is crucial in addressing the country's drinking water-related challenges, such as water scarcity and safety, and creating green jobs.

The Maldives, which consists of 26 atolls southwest of Sri Lanka, is the lowest country in the world, and its 1,192 islands are composed mainly of coral reefs and sand bars. This combination makes for an abnormally shallow aquifer; groundwater and freshwater are incredibly scarce. As a result, drinking water shortages have become a regular occurrence on the outer islands during the dry season, significantly impacting people’s health, food security and productivity.

 Wayout’s innovative system is developed to increase drinking water safety by improving drinking water quality, availability, accessibility, affordability, sustainability, and ethicality. In addition, this innovative water purification, distribution, and dispensation system is developed to reduce the use of plastic bottles and the overall carbon footprint. A single Wayout system produces up to 18,000 litres of mineral water daily – enough to provide 9,000 people with their daily need for drinking water – while simultaneously preventing up to 13 million plastic bottles and 1,400 tons of CO₂ from entering the ecosystem yearly. Enhancing water security and eliminating single-use plastics is a key focus under the small island state’s climate goals and one of the ways the government is building more resilient islands. Hotels & Resorts Investment Pvt Ltd will collaborate with Wayout International to bring Wayout's sustainable technology to expand access to high-quality, safe drinking water in the Maldives.

 The World Bank estimates that the Maldives produces 365,000 tons of solid waste a year, with the bulk of that waste that resort islands generate. A single Wayout system prevents up to 13 million plastic bottles and 1,400 tons of CO₂ from entering the ecosystem yearly.

 The contract between Hotels and Resorts Investment Pvt Ltd and Wayout is worth EUR 30 million, and the first micro-factory will be deployed to the Maldives in November 2023.
