India and Maldives sign 10 MoUs to boost development cooperation

The Maldives and India have signed 10 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to initiate projects funded under Indian grant assistance. The MoUs were signed during a ceremony in Male on June 4, 2023.


The projects covered by the MoUs include the development of an arts center in Male, a running track in Milandhoo, the construction of a new council office in Hinnavaru, and the establishment of a mental health unit at Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital. Other projects include the procurement of school buses for Fuvahmulah City, Kulhudhuffushi City, Kendhikulhudhoo, and Gan, the development of outdoor gyms in Hithadhoo, Vaadhoo, and Dhidhdhoo, as well as the school digitalization program in Laamu Atoll Education Centre.


The MoUs were signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives Abdulla Shahid and High Commissioner of India to the Maldives Munu Mahawar. The ceremony was attended by other government officials from both countries.


In his remarks, Minister Shahid said that the signing of the MoUs is a testament to the strong and close ties between the Maldives and India. He also expressed gratitude for India's continued support to the Maldives' development efforts.


Minister Mahawar said that the projects under the MoUs will benefit the people of the Maldives and contribute to the country's socio-economic development. He also reiterated India's commitment to continue working with the Maldives to achieve shared development goals.


The signing of the MoUs is a significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between the Maldives and India. The projects under the MoUs will help to improve the lives of the people of the Maldives and contribute to the country's overall development.


In addition to the MoUs, Minister Shahid and Minister Mahawar also witnessed the gifting of anti-tuberculosis (TB) medication to the Ministry of Health. The medication was donated by the Government of India.
