Maldives to Construct New Harbors in Noomaraa and Eydhafushi

The Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure has contracted the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to construct new harbors in Noomaraa in Shaviyani Atoll and Eydhafushi in Baa Atoll.


The agreement was signed by Permanent Secretary of Planning Ministry Zeeniya Ahmed Hameed and MTCC CEO Adam Azim on June 24, 2023.


The Noomaraa harbor project includes maintenance dredging operations, new harbor basin dredging operations, channel dredging operations, a breakwater, revetment, quay wall, quay wall repair, mooring bouys, a ramp, two jetties, harbor lights, pavement, and curbs. The value of the project is USD3.7 million and it is scheduled to be completed within 455 days.


The Eydhafushi harbor project includes maintenance dredging operations, channel dredging operations, a breakwater, revetment, quay wall, a ramp, a bridge, harbor lights, pavement, and curbs. The value of the project is USD4.5 million and it is scheduled to be completed within 450 days.


The construction of these new harbors will improve the connectivity and accessibility of these two islands, which will boost economic development and tourism in the Maldives.


Here are some additional details about the projects:



  • The Noomaraa harbor project will involve the dredging of 5,100 cubic meters of maintenance dredging operations, 34,400 cubic meters of new harbor basin dredging operations, and 2,920 cubic meters of channel dredging operations.

  • The Eydhafushi harbor project will involve the dredging of 28,000 cubic meters of maintenance dredging operations and 3,400 cubic meters of channel dredging operations.

  • Both projects will include the construction of a breakwater, revetment, quay wall, and other infrastructure.

  • The Noomaraa harbor project is scheduled to be completed within 455 days, and the Eydhafushi harbor project is scheduled to be completed within 450 days.
