The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has mobilized the site for the Hithadhoo-Kunahandhoo causeway project in Laamu atoll. The project, which is valued at MVR 75.2 million, was contracted by the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.

The causeway will connect Hithadhoo, Kunahandhoo, and Mendhoo, an uninhabited island between the two inhabited islands. This will allow for easy and efficient transportation between the three islands, as well as enable the residents of Hithadhoo and Kunahandhoo to conduct economic activities in Mendhoo.

Under the scope of the project, MTCC will be conducting land reclamation operations in an area measuring 22,408 cubic meters. They will also be constructing a 390-meter revetment, a scouring apron measuring 130 meters, a bridge measuring 225 meters, a carriageway measuring 3,006 square meters, an 85-meter retaining wall, and streetlights.

The project is expected to be completed within 500 days. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be carried out before the project commences.

The causeway is a major infrastructure development project that will benefit the people of Laamu atoll. It will improve connectivity and economic opportunities, and it will also help to protect the environment.
