The Maldives NCD Alliance, a coalition comprising seven influential associations, has formally appealed to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, urging him to ban the import of vapes and e-cigarettes in the country. In a letter presented to the presidency, the alliance articulated its grave concerns regarding the surging popularity of these products and their potential impact on public health.

The coalition emphasized that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent the most significant health challenge in the Maldives. Tobacco and tobacco-related products, including vapes and e-cigarettes, have been identified as primary contributors to this health crisis. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vapes and e-cigarettes are classified as tobacco products, and their usage has escalated remarkably in recent years.

“The side effects of these products are numerous, contributing to adverse health outcomes and increasing the risk of NCDs,” the alliance stated. The members of the coalition include prominent organizations such as the Cancer Society, Diabetes Society, SHE, Thalassemia Society, Mental Health Awareness Foundation, MAPD, and Tiny Hearts.

The NCD Alliance has called for immediate action to prohibit the import and usage of vapes and e-cigarettes, arguing that such a ban would enhance public health, mitigate the risk of NCDs, and protect the youth from potential drug addiction.

Research cited by the alliance from the American Cancer Society revealed alarming statistics: vape usage is responsible for 15 percent of reported lung cancer risk factors. Furthermore, over 30 percent of vape users are reported to face an increased risk of developing diabetes, alongside other severe health issues such as kidney failure, stroke, and heart attacks.

The Maldives NCD Alliance was formed with the goal of fostering collaborative efforts to combat NCDs within the nation. The founding members of the alliance include:

- Ms. Aishath Shiruhana (CEO) - Diabetes Society of Maldives (DSM)

- Mr. Ali Muaz (Co-Founder) - Tiny Hearts of Maldives (THM)

- Dr. Abdul Malik (Co-Founder) - Cancer Society of Maldives (CSM)

The alliance is set to expand its membership to include all NGOs, institutions, and organizations that are working towards controlling NCDs in the Maldives. Through collective action and advocacy, the Maldives NCD Alliance aims to address the pressing health concerns posed by vapes and promote a healthier future for all Maldivians.
